A-DICTION:
A man in Thailand plays a video game for several days straight and drops dead of exhaustion. Two young men write countless throw-away songs that they sing into strangers' answering machines. A 28-year-old in Japan, bored with flight simulators, hijacks a 747 to loop the Rainbow bridge in Tokyo bay. The "librarian of pornography," former employee of the National Library in Washington, applies his cataloguing skills to an extensive private collection of porn.
These people are addicts and escapists. The motivations of most people are easy to peg: money, power, sexual ambition... They want to be wealthy or famous. But when you are compelled to own the largest collection of Canadian ashtrays, or comic books about robots... that drive is less easily defined. What's the pay-off? Alienation from the rest of society?
What are they doing? Why do they do it? Can you understand? Can you empathize? We are watching and trying.
